West German
hand-incised on the base '712/ Ruscha/ Handarbeit/ Torso/ RH'
Ruscha was established by Rudolph Schardt in 1948, the name comprising of the first few letters of his name. This rare design of a woman's torso dates to the 1950s and is made in a red clay, which was unusual for the company. White clay was almost always used by the manufacturer, except when periods when the normal source of clay ran out. At this time in the 1950s, a small number of works were hand-inscribed with the name Ruscha and the decorator's initials, as here 'RH', and with numbers in the 700 range (here, '712') and the title (here, 'Torso').
